Abuja Based Lawyer, Agbor Etaba Petitions House Of Representatives For Intervention As Severe And Prolonged Power Outages Plague Obubra LGA
Residents of Obubra Local Government Area in Cross River State have raised the alarm over severe and prolonged power outages, calling on the Nigeria House of Representatives for urgent intervention. The petition, addressed to the Speaker and channeled through the House Committee on Public Petitions, underscores the dire situation and the adverse impact on the communities.
Agbor Etaba, Esq., an Abuja-based lawyer and native of Apiapum Community in Obubra LGA, submitted the petition on behalf of himself and the affected residents. Agwu highlighted the critical state of fallen electrical poles in various communities, including Apiapum, Ohana, Iyamoyong, Ababene, and extensive parts of Osopong, which have left these areas without electricity for an extended period. Attached to the petition were photographs illustrating the condition of the fallen poles.
The petition also drew attention to other communities such as Isobo-Otaka, Biko Biko, Ebora Echara, Enyibichiri, Izzi, Ofomana, and Igo, which have been without electricity for an even longer duration, with some areas never having access to power. This persistent neglect has not only stymied socio-economic development but also endangered the health, safety, and well-being of the residents.
The petition calls for the House of Representatives to:
1. Investigate the Root Causes: Conduct a comprehensive investigation into the reasons behind the prolonged power outages in Obubra LGA, including the specific circumstances surrounding the fallen and abandoned poles in the affected communities.
2. Hold Responsible Parties Accountable: Hold the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission accountable for their negligence and failure to provide reliable electricity services.
3. Immediate Restoration of Services: Take immediate action to repair and restore electricity services in the affected areas, ensuring residents are no longer subjected to the hardships and dangers of prolonged power outages.
4. Long-term Solutions and Development: Implement long-term solutions and infrastructure projects to address the underlying issues contributing to inadequate electricity provision, particularly in marginalized and underserved communities.
Agbor emphasized that this petition represents the residents’ last resort in seeking justice and alleviating their suffering. He called on the Honourable House of Representatives to prioritize the petition and take swift measures to restore hope and improve the quality of life in Obubra LGA.
The residents trust in the commitment of the House of Representatives to ensure justice, equity, and accountability for all Nigerians, and they await prompt action on this pressing issue.
