Yiaga Africa Deploys Mission To Observe 2024 Ghana Elections

Yiaga Africa has deployed an election study mission to Ghana ahead of the country’s 9th presidential and parliamentary elections, following accreditation by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC). The mission aims to observe and document best practices in election result management, voting rights, electoral technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and issue-based politics.

Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, emphasized in a press statement that the mission seeks to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on electoral processes through comparative lessons from Ghana’s elections. This initiative is part of Yiaga Africa’s Transforming Electoral Governance in Africa (TEGA) program, which promotes enhanced electoral governance through evidence-based learning, documentation, and advocacy.

The 12-person delegation is led by Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, former African Union Commissioner of Political Affairs, and includes prominent figures such as:

Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, Chairman of the Nigerian Senate Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters.
Hon. Prince Adebayo Balogun, Chairman of the Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters.
Dr. Hussaini Abdu, Yiaga Africa Board Chair and Country Director for CARE International, Nigeria.
Barrister Afam Osigwe (SAN), President of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Other members include legislators, academics, civil society leaders, legal experts, and media practitioners from across Africa.

The mission will observe pre-election, election day, and post-election activities using diverse observation tools. It will also engage with key electoral stakeholders and collaborate with domestic and international observer missions to ensure a holistic understanding of Ghana’s electoral process.

This marks Yiaga Africa’s fourth election study mission under the TEGA initiative, underscoring its commitment to fostering credible and transparent electoral governance across Africa.
