“Veiled In Strength” – Coalition Stresses Importance Of Hijab As A Fundamental Right

In a resolute affirmation of their commitment to safeguarding the rights of hijab-wearing women, the Coalition of Nigerian Muslim Women held a press briefing in Abuja to mark the 2024 World Hijab Day.
With the theme “Veiled in Strength,” the coalition, consisting of various organizations, including FOMWAN, NASFAT, Women in Da’awah, JADAFIA, Criterion, Ansaruddeen MESH, and Muslim schools in Abuja, highlighted the significance of the hijab as an integral part of the Muslim woman’s identity.
World Hijab Day, initiated by Bangladeshi American Nazma Khan in 2013, is commemorated globally on February 1 in 140 countries. The day aims to encourage Muslim women who choose hijab-wearing as an expression of faith and identity to educate and raise awareness about their choice.
During the press briefing, Barrister Rukayat Dindi, a member of the coalition, emphasized that wearing the hijab is not merely a choice but a protected right under Nigerian laws. The coalition’s primary focus is advocating for the recognition and protection of this right, ensuring that hijab-wearing women can participate actively in all public spheres without fear of harm or prejudice.
Barrister Dindi called for the support of teachers and ambassadors of Islam, urging them to join the coalition in its efforts. She emphasized the need for widespread understanding and acceptance of the message.
Firdaus Amasa, another member of the coalition, appealed to governments at all levels to provide services that cater to individuals defined by their belief and obedience to divine commands. She called on the National Assembly to pass the Religious Discrimination (Prohibition, Prevention) Bill, 2021, to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens, irrespective of their attire.
Amasa also urged the Ministry of Education at the federal and state levels to address the recurring problem of unnecessary victimization of students based on their appearance. She called for measures to guarantee a safe and inclusive educational environment for all.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s first lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, celebrated Muslim girls and women on World Hijab Day, aligning herself with the coalition’s mission to protect and promote the rights of hijab-wearing individuals.
