US Army Bans Transgender Individuals From Enlisting, Halts Gender Transition Procedures

The US Army has announced an immediate ban on transgender individuals enlisting in the military, along with a suspension of all procedures related to gender transition for service members.

In a statement shared on X, the Army confirmed that new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are now paused. Additionally, all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures affirming or facilitating a gender transition for service members have been halted.

“The #USArmy will no longer allow transgender individuals to join the military and will stop performing or facilitating procedures associated with gender transition for service members,” the Army stated, adding that those currently serving will still be treated with “dignity and respect.”

This decision follows President Donald Trump’s recent executive order reinstating a ban on transgender service members. The order, signed on January 20, reversed a 2021 directive by former President Joe Biden that had allowed transgender individuals to serve openly in the military.

Trump had initially introduced a similar ban in 2017 during his first term, which was later repealed by Biden in 2021. The latest move is part of a broader series of military policy changes under Trump’s administration, including reinstating with back pay troops who were discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine.
