US Accuses Russia Of Funding Both Sides In Sudan Conflict

The United States has accused Russia of providing financial support to both factions involved in Sudan’s ongoing war, describing the move as a deliberate act to endanger civilians.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, made the accusation during a Security Council meeting on Monday. “Russia chose obstruction: standing alone as it voted to imperil civilians while funding both sides of the conflict—yes, that’s what I said: both sides,” she stated, without offering additional details.

The war in Sudan began in April 2023, stemming from a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has since led to the world’s largest displacement crisis and widespread hunger.

A U.S. mission spokesperson condemned any material support for the warring factions, including “illicit gold trading or the provision of military equipment.” They pointed to Sudan’s gold mining ties with sanctioned Russian entities, which they argue hinder Sudan’s path to peace.

In November, Russia vetoed a UN resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Sudan. The resolution was supported by 14 other Security Council members.

Russian Deputy Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy dismissed the U.S. allegations, criticising Washington’s foreign policy. “We regret that the U.S. tries to judge other world powers by its own yardstick,” he said.

Thomas-Greenfield, who is set to step down as U.S. ambassador, expressed hope for a resolution to Sudan’s crisis despite limited progress during her tenure. “For all the disappointment that I couldn’t do more, that we—all of us—didn’t do more, I still remain hopeful,” she said in an emotional address.

Her departure coincides with the end of President Joe Biden’s administration, as Donald Trump is set to assume office on January 20.
