UK-Based Nigerian Sues Nasarawa Over Demolition, Seeks N500m Compensation

Robert Baba Idoko, a Nigerian businessman based in the UK, has filed a lawsuit against the Nasarawa State Government. He claims the state unlawfully demolished his property in Gbegyedna community. Idoko seeks N500 million in compensation for the loss.

Idoko built a property behind City College of Education in Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa. He invested his life savings to build the structure. After purchasing the land, Idoko submitted building plans and paid for a survey and file opening at the Nasarawa State Urban Development Board. He received building approval and a receipt.

On October 3, 2024, police, civil defence, and NUDB staff invaded his property early in the morning. They used bulldozers to demolish the building without prior notice. Idoko alleges the state falsely claimed the land belongs to a Catholic priest with valid title documents. He disputes this claim and says the demolition occurred unlawfully.

Idoko now faces severe financial and personal losses. The demolition of his property has caused him psychological trauma and led to a job loss in the United Kingdom. His lawyer, Ndubisi Kalu, filed a petition on November 20, 2024, against the Nasarawa authorities. Kalu insists that all beneficiaries of the late Engr. Iyke Ejizu’s estate must be informed before any sale of assets occurs. Kalu demands that the state pay N500 million as damages within seven days.

The lawsuit claims that the demolition in Nasarawa violates legal rights and property laws. The petition warns that if the state fails to compensate Idoko within the deadline, his legal team will approach a competent court to seek higher damages. Kalu describes the state’s actions as deliberate, coordinated, and aimed at unlawfully seizing property value. The case now awaits further court proceedings as the affected parties seek justice and fair compensation.

The lawsuit highlights growing tensions over property rights in Nasarawa. It also underscores the need for strict adherence to legal procedures during demolition operations. The court will review all evidence and determine if the demolition was unlawful.
