Tragic Loss: Nigerian Lawyer Turned Caregiver Dies in UK
A Nigerian lawyer turned caregiver collapsed on duty in Bishop’s Stortford, UK, and tragically passed away two days later, leaving behind a devastated community and family.
Chidimma Susan Ezenyili, affectionately known as Suzy, was only 37 years old when she collapsed while caring for her elderly client, 86-year-old Ian Hale, in Scott Road. Despite feeling unwell, Suzy was determined not to let down Ian, whom she had been caring for over the past five months.
According to Catherine Segal, Ian’s daughter, Suzy’s dedication to her work was evident even when she wasn’t feeling well. Catherine recounted how Suzy and her husband, Friday, had come to the UK from Nigeria in August the previous year to provide a better life for their three-year-old daughter, Mandy. Both Suzy and Friday worked as caregivers on sponsorship visas.
When Suzy collapsed on Thursday, February 22, neighbours rushed to her aid. Despite their efforts and the arrival of emergency services, Suzy did not regain consciousness. She was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where doctors discovered she had suffered a severe brain haemorrhage. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Suzy passed away on February 24, with her husband by her side.
Catherine described Suzy as a wonderful caregiver who always went above and beyond to help others, despite her own challenges. Suzy’s dream was to provide her daughter, Mandy, with opportunities for a better life in the UK.
In response to the family’s plight, Catherine has set up a JustGiving appeal to support Friday and Mandy. Friday, now a lone parent, faces significant challenges without access to public funds. The community has rallied around the family, expressing gratitude for Suzy’s dedication and kindness.
The loss of Suzy has deeply impacted the community, highlighting the selflessness and compassion she brought to her work as a caregiver. As friends and neighbours mourn her passing, they are coming together to support her family during this tragic time.
