Tinubu Pays Tribute As Former US President Jimmy Carter Passes Away
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the government and people of the United States following the death of former President Jimmy Carter. Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the 39th President of the United States, passed away at the age of 100, as announced by a not-for-profit organization on Monday, December 30.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s aide on information and strategy, Tinubu hailed Carter as a beacon of service to humanity, whose post-presidential life demonstrated the profound impact of dedication to global causes.
“As a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and global statesman, President Carter devoted his post-presidential life to the causes of peace, democracy, and the eradication of tropical diseases. His unwavering commitment to these noble pursuits has left an indelible mark on the world,” Tinubu said.
Reflecting on Carter’s leadership, Tinubu praised his efforts to address the challenges faced by developing nations, including combating diseases, mediating conflicts, and promoting democratic values. “President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” Tinubu remarked.
Tinubu also recalled Carter’s personal connection to Nigeria, highlighting his significant contributions through The Carter Center in eradicating diseases such as Guinea worm and river blindness in the country. These efforts, Tinubu noted, greatly improved the lives of many Nigerians.
The Nigerian president also reflected on Carter’s historic state visit to Nigeria in March 1978 during his presidency, which he described as a pivotal moment in U.S.-Africa relations. “Under Carter’s leadership, this visit laid the groundwork for a pragmatic relationship between the United States and Africa, with Nigeria at its heart,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu concluded by expressing hope that Carter’s enduring legacy of decency, character, and humanity will continue to inspire leaders and citizens worldwide to embrace the true essence of leadership.
