President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated the state-of-the-art National Cybercrime Centre to enhance the effectiveness of Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies. Represented by Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, President Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s dedication to bolstering the Nigeria Police Force with adequate arms, equipment, recruitment, and continuous training to improve the quality and readiness of police personnel.

“This administration remains resolute in the fight against all forms of criminality,” said Tinubu. “Cyber crimes are a new frontier in our battle, with cybercriminals, online financial fraudsters, and cyber terrorists increasingly posing threats through the internet.”

Tinubu highlighted that technological advancements, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the advent of 5G technology have expanded the range and complexity of cyberspace threats. In response, the federal government has implemented several major policy decisions, including a review of the cybercrime plan to mitigate the risks posed by cybercriminals.

In his goodwill message, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of Police Affairs, represented by Mr. Ibrahim Muhammad, Director of the Police Services Department, emphasized that the most severe forms of criminality now occur in cyberspace, especially among the youth, causing significant harm to society. He praised the Nigeria Police Force for their proactive measures in addressing this cyber menace by establishing the Cyber Crime Centre.

Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, noted that the modern digital technology facility will revolutionize policing in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa in combating cyber threats. “The NPF National Cybercrime Centre strengthens our commitment to leveraging technology, innovation, and collaboration to tackle the growing challenges of cybercrimes. This centre represents a new frontier in law enforcement, utilizing cutting-edge tools, expertise, and partnerships to protect, investigate, and combat cybercrimes,” Egbetokun stated.
