“They Went Back To Deadly Marriages”: Nigerian Lawyer Shares Shocking Client Stories

A Nigerian lawyer, Favour Ajuebor, has shed light on a troubling pattern among clients seeking divorce from abusive partners, revealing how some abandon legal proceedings and return to dangerous relationships.
Ajuebor recounted instances where clients abruptly stopped communicating with their lawyers, even deserting ongoing court cases. To the lawyers’ dismay, many of these individuals were later discovered to have reconciled with their abusive spouses.
In his words, “After discovering they were back to their abusive spouses, I realized I had no right to put asunder.”
Ajuebor made the revelation while reacting to a recent report from Anambra, where a woman, allegedly brutalized by her husband and thrown out with her baby, still refused to leave the marriage.
The lawyer’s account highlights the complexities of domestic abuse cases in Nigeria, where societal, emotional, or financial pressures often deter victims from breaking free of toxic relationships. Legal experts and advocates have called for more robust support systems to help victims navigate the challenging journey of leaving abusive environments.
