Supreme Court To Honour Late Justice Emmanuel Ogwuegbu With Valedictory Session

The Supreme Court of Nigeria will host a valedictory session on May 14, 2025, at 2 p.m., to honour the late Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, who died peacefully in his sleep on October 28, 2024, at the age of 91.

Justice Ogwuegbu’s Legal Legacy

Born on March 16, 1933, in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma, Imo State, Justice Ogwuegbu began his judicial journey as a High Court Judge in Imo State in 1976. He served as Administrative Judge in Owerri and Aba before his elevation to the Court of Appeal in 1987, where he worked in Ibadan and Lagos.

In 1992, he joined the Supreme Court of Nigeria, where he served with distinction until 2003. Between 1999 and 2002, Ogwuegbu was seconded to the Supreme Court of The Gambia, further expanding his regional judicial influence.

Dignitaries to Attend Supreme Court Tribute

The Supreme Court, under the leadership of Chief Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, will preside over the special session. Legal dignitaries, including Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, are expected to attend and deliver tributes.

Celebrating a Lifetime of Judicial Excellence

Dr Festus Aweneri Akande, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Supreme Court, confirmed the event and Justice Ogwuegbu’s peaceful passing. He described the session as a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to upholding justice and strengthening Nigeria’s judiciary.
