Supreme Court Releases Step-by-Step Guideline For Online Notary Public Applications

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has unveiled a clear step-by-step guideline for lawyers seeking Notary Public status. The Court announced the new digital process on its official portal, https://notary.supremecourt.gov.ng.
The reform represents a major step toward modernising legal administration. It provides lawyers with a streamlined and transparent pathway to becoming Notaries Public. According to the Supreme Court, the application process now follows five structured stages.
Step 1: Create a Profile
Applicants must first create a personal profile on the official portal. This profile serves as the foundation for the application.
Step 2: Payment of Application Fee
After registration, applicants are required to make the prescribed application fee payment. The court emphasized that payments must be properly documented.
Step 3: Upload Required Documents
Applicants must then log in to the portal and upload all necessary documents. These include a recent passport photograph, Call to Bar Certificate, and proof of payment of practicing fees for seven consecutive years. The requirement of seven years confirms a lawyer’s continuous professional engagement.
Step 4: Submission of Application
Once documents are uploaded, applicants must electronically sign and submit the form. This marks the formal completion of their application.
Step 5: Processing and Approval
The court will then process applications. Upon approval, the applicant receives an official Notary Public certificate issued by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The apex court assured lawyers that the digital process will enhance efficiency and reduce delays. Furthermore, the system was designed to guarantee transparency and accessibility across the legal profession.
For complaints and inquiries, the Supreme Court has provided an official email: notary@supremecourt.gov.ng.
By adopting technology, the Supreme Court registry has reinforced the judiciary’s commitment to efficiency and modernisation. This initiative simplifies access to Notary Public status and strengthens confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.
