State of Emergency: Governor Fubara Urges Calm, Reaffirms Commitment To Democracy

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has broken his silence following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, urging residents to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding.

The emergency rule, announced on Monday, March 18, comes amid political turmoil, including impeachment attempts against Governor Fubara. As part of the decision, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas has been appointed Sole Administrator of the state, while Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly stand suspended.

In a statement on Tuesday, March 19, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his dedication to constitutional governance, stating that he had implemented peace agreements brokered by the presidency, including reinstating commissioners who had resigned.

He also stated that he complied with the Supreme Court’s judgment and took actions to restore stability and unity in Rivers State. However, he accused the Rivers State House of Assembly of obstructing peace efforts and hindering genuine progress.

Despite the ongoing crisis, Fubara assured residents that his government had continued to prioritize security, pay salaries, and execute key projects to move the state forward.

“At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding,” he stated. “We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive.”

He expressed confidence in the resilience of Rivers people, calling for wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process as the situation unfolds.
