SHOCKING! ECWA Pastor Accused Of R@pe Allegedly Deploying Police To Intimidate Survivor

In a troubling case that raises serious questions about institutional accountability, abuse of power, and gender-based violence, Rev. Dr. David Adamu Gyet, a senior pastor in the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), stands accused of allegedly using the Nigerian Police to harass and intimidate a woman who has accused him of r@pe.

Background of the Allegation

The female survivor, Asabe Danbaba, alleges that she was r@ped by Dr. Gyet in 2012 while living with him as a domestic help during his tenure at ECWA Church, Karu, Abuja. Following the incident, a panel constituted by the ECWA leadership investigated the matter, during which Dr. Gyet reportedly admitted to the misconduct. He was subsequently suspended and placed under church discipline. Despite the gravity of the matter, he was later reinstated by the church.

The issue resurfaced in 2024 when Dr. Gyet sought the position of ECWA Church President. The unresolved allegation led to his disqualification from the contest. According to reports, rather than submit himself to further scrutiny or justice, Dr. Gyet has allegedly launched a campaign of intimidation against the survivor using law enforcement agents.

Police Involvement and Detention of Survivor

On Thursday, July 3, 2025, the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Gender Unit in Abuja invited both parties for questioning based on a petition submitted to the Inspector General of Police by Tom Garba, founder of TG News, reportedly on behalf of Dr. Gyet.

Upon arrival at the FCID, Asabe was accompanied by her legal representatives—Barr. B.Y. Gambo and Barr. Ibrahim Ahmed Buba, founder of Access to Justice for Women and Children. She maintained her consistent account of r@pe and reiterated that the original ECWA investigative committee had found Dr. Gyet culpable.

However, proceedings took a dramatic turn the following day, Friday, July 4. During interrogation by the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Gender at FCID, a letter allegedly submitted to ECWA headquarters in 2024 on Asabe’s behalf was presented to her and her uncle, Rev. Manomi Danbiki. Though they confirmed the letter was written with their full consent, the head of the investigation unit astonishingly ordered their immediate detention on alleged charges of forgery.

Legal Objections and Allegations of Abuse of Power

Barr. Buba objected strongly to the detention, arguing that no offence had been committed since there was no dispute about the authenticity or authorization of the letter. However, he was reportedly ordered out of the investigation office while Asabe and her uncle were thrown into police cells. They were only released after legal intervention from Asabe’s counsel.

Barr. Buba, when contacted, condemned the police’s handling of the matter, stating unequivocally that “Rev. Dr. Gyet is manipulating law enforcement to silence his accuser, this is case where a victim is being victimized again because her predator has both material and social influence than her.”

Call for Justice and Civil Society Outrage

Asabe has since called on the Attorney General of the Federation, Inspector General of Police, National Human Rights Commission, Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA), and Amnesty International to urgently intervene. She is demanding an independent, transparent, and unbiased investigation, and ultimately, the prosecution of Dr. Gyet.

She also revealed that in 2024, during the ECWA presidential campaign, emissaries of Dr. Gyet allegedly visited her workplace and offered her incentives to withdraw the petition, asking her to “name her price”—an offer she rejected.

Ongoing Threats and Need for Protection

Asabe now says she and her family are living in fear. “My life is in danger,” she said, citing increasing threats and attempts at intimidation from multiple quarters.

With the matter now escalating, several human rights organizations and civil society groups are taking an interest in the case, promising to ensure justice is neither delayed nor denied.

This case is not only a test of Nigeria’s legal and policing institutions but a broader challenge to the culture of impunity surrounding sexual abuse, especially when the accused holds religious or political power.
