Senate To Issue Arrest Warrant For NNPCL Chiefs, HoCSF Over Missed Summonses

The Senate has revealed plans to issue arrest warrants for several agencies that have consistently failed to honor invitations from lawmakers. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen (LP, Edo South), is set to target key agencies, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, and Union Homes Savings and Loans Plc.

Other organizations facing potential arrest warrants include the Federal Ministry of Works, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Sally Best Properties Limited, and the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.

Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary session, Senator Imasuen informed the Senate of his intention to take action against these agencies due to their repeated refusal to attend Senate hearings. Citing Order 42 from the Senate Rule Book, Imasuen sought permission from the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to issue the arrest warrants.

Imasuen emphasized the importance of ensuring accountability, stating, “Because of the consistent refusal of some officers of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to attend meetings when called, I will be issuing a warrant of arrest to compel these errant officers to appear before the Senate Committee.”

Senate President Akpabio expressed his support for the move, noting that the committee has the power to take such action. “You have informed us of your intention, and your point of order is sustained,” Akpabio confirmed, allowing the committee to proceed with the necessary measures to enforce compliance.

The Senate’s action reflects its determination to hold government agencies accountable and ensure their participation in oversight processes.
