Senate Summons Service Chiefs For Security Briefing

The Nigerian Senate has taken proactive measures to address the escalating insecurity plaguing the nation by summoning the Service Chiefs and Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on National Assembly Matters, Senator Abdullahi Gumel, to brief lawmakers on the prevailing security challenges across the country.

In a significant departure from its usual proceedings, the Senate suspended its rules to allow the esteemed guests access to the upper chamber for a comprehensive briefing on the general state of insecurity nationwide. Additionally, they are expected to provide insights into the concerning infiltration of bandits and kidnappers into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with a focus on devising lasting solutions to address the situation.

The decision to summon the service chiefs follows a unanimous resolution reached during an emergency session convened on January 30, the first legislative day of the year, reflecting the Senate’s grave concerns regarding the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria.

In order to ensure the participation of all key stakeholders involved in security management across the country, the Senate has adjourned the security briefing to February 13, 2024.

The motion to adjourn the security briefing was proposed by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and seconded by Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in approving the adjournment, emphasized the Senate’s commitment to conducting a comprehensive deliberation on insecurity, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach to addressing the nation’s security challenges.
