Senate Passes Vote Of Confidence In Akpabio Amidst Rumored Impeachment Plot
The Nigerian Senate has passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, following reports of a rumored plot to remove him from office. The motion was sponsored by Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, during a Senate session on Thursday.
The vote came just a day after media speculation suggested that some senators were plotting Akpabio’s impeachment. Addressing the chamber, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, representing Kebbi North, expressed concern that northern senators were being falsely accused of leading the alleged plot.
“As a northern senator, my privilege has been breached by these allegations,” Abdullahi stated, emphasizing that there had been no move by northern senators to challenge Akpabio’s leadership. He praised the Senate president’s “good works,” dismissing the rumors as unfounded.
Following Abdullahi’s remarks, Senator Ningi stated that if any senators had issues with Akpabio’s leadership, they would address him directly. He then moved for a vote of confidence in Akpabio, his deputy, and the entire leadership of the National Assembly.
The motion was put to a voice vote by Akpabio and was unanimously adopted by the Senate, reaffirming his leadership amidst the alleged controversy.
