Rotarians Take Polio Awareness To Wuse Market, Abuja

Abuja, October 21, 2025 — As part of activities marking this year’s World Polio Day, Rotarians from all six Rotary Districts in Nigeria, namely 9111, 9112, 9126, 9127, 9141, and 9142, stormed Wuse Market in Abuja this morning to raise awareness on the importance of immunizing children against polio.

In a colorful and energetic campaign, the Rotarians partnered with barrow boys, mobile transporters known for their visibility and constant movement within the market, to spread the message on ending polio. Clad in branded End Polio Now shirts and caps, the teams moved through the busy market, interacting with traders, parents, and shoppers, urging them to ensure that every child aged 0–5 years receives the polio vaccine.

Speaking at the event, District Governor of Rotary International District 9127, Rtn Joy Nky Okoro, reaffirmed Rotary’s long-standing leadership in the global effort to eradicate polio.

“Rotary has been at the forefront of the fight to end polio since 1988,” she said. “Our collaboration with the barrow boys is deliberate because of their mobility and influence in the market community. Together, we can take the message to every corner and ensure no child is left behind.”

The District Polio Chairperson for District 9127, Dr. Khadijat Yusuf, emphasized that the polio vaccine is safe and effective.

“The vaccine works,” she said. “We must continue to encourage parents and caregivers to immunize children aged zero to five years. Every dose counts, and every immunized child brings us closer to a polio-free Nigeria.”

Rtn Fred Odika, President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Metro, highlighted the progress achieved through Rotary’s sustained campaign.

“Thanks to Rotary and our partners, polio is almost a thing of the past,” he said. “But our work is not done yet. Those still resisting vaccination must wake up and realize this is about protecting our children’s future. Immunization saves lives.”

Leader of the barrow boys, Mr. Suraju Ibrahim, expressed enthusiasm about supporting the initiative.

“We are always moving around the market, so we can help spread the word faster,” he said. “We are telling parents: please take your children for immunization. It’s simple and it saves lives.”

The market-wide awareness event drew the attention of hundreds of traders and shoppers, many of whom stopped to listen, cheer, and chant “End Polio Now!” alongside the Rotarians.

This outreach is one of several coordinated activities by all Rotary Districts in Nigeria to commemorate World Polio Day, observed globally on October 24, to celebrate progress in the fight against poliomyelitis and renew commitment to achieving a polio-free world.
