The Rivers State Government has acknowledged media reports regarding the recent Supreme Court judgment on the state’s funds and local government administration.

In a statement signed by Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the Commissioner for Information & Communications, the government confirmed that it is awaiting a detailed legal briefing on the judgment’s implications. The administration assured residents that the next steps would be taken in the best interest of Rivers State and its people.

While urging the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue their legitimate businesses, the statement clarified that the defection of 27 lawmakers from the state assembly is still pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt and was not part of the Supreme Court’s considerations.

“Since the issue of defection was not before the learned Justices, in their eyes, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still operating as lawmakers until that matter of defection comes before them,” the statement read.

The government reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the interests of Rivers State as it seeks clarity on the judgment.

The administration assured residents that it would provide further updates as more information becomes available.
