Rivers Assembly Adjourns Sitting Indefinitely

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended its sittings indefinitely. Speaker Martin Amaewhule announced the decision during plenary in Port Harcourt on Friday.

The adjournment comes hours after Governor Siminalayi Fubara informed the Speaker of his plan to present the 2025 budget. In a letter dated March 13, Fubara requested to present the budget on March 19 or any other date within the month.

Fubara’s letter cited compliance with a Supreme Court judgment and the lawmakers’ request for him to re-present the budget. The governor recalled his previous attempt to present the budget at the Assembly Quarters, where lawmakers had relocated. However, he and his entourage were denied access to the venue where the Rivers House of Assembly was sitting on that day.

The indefinite adjournment of Rivers House of Assembly sitting raises uncertainty over when legislative activities will resume. It also leaves questions about when the 2025 budget will be considered. The political standoff between the governor and the Rivers House of Assembly continues to escalate, adding tension to governance in the state.
