Rivers APC Chairman Gives Governor Fubara 48-Hour Ultimatum to Resign or Face Impeachment

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has demanded the resignation of Governor Siminalayi Fubara within 48 hours, threatening that failure to do so will lead to his impeachment by the State House of Assembly.

Okocha made this declaration on Monday, March 10, during a press briefing at his private residence in Port Harcourt. He accused Governor Fubara of disrespecting President Bola Tinubu, particularly in his handling of the political crisis in the state.

“Resign or Be Impeached,” Okocha Warns Fubara

“As a political party, we are today advising the governor: there are two options—resign honourably or be impeached. That is the position of the All Progressives Congress,” Okocha stated.

He further alleged that Fubara’s actions undermined President Tinubu’s attempts to mediate the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.

“He has disrespected Mr. President, and we told him that we cannot stand by and watch him insult the President.”

Citing Supreme Court Ruling as Basis for Impeachment

The APC chairman claimed that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the crisis provided enough grounds to impeach the governor, arguing that no further investigation is necessary.

“The offences are there; the Supreme Court has agreed and even provided us with more evidence. The House of Assembly does not need to set up any committee again to investigate him.”

He insisted that Fubara’s resignation should be immediate, emphasizing that even 48 hours is too generous an ultimatum.

“48 hours is too much to give him as an ultimatum. He should just resign honourably.”

Political Context: APC’s Renewed Strength in Rivers Assembly

This call for Fubara’s resignation comes just a week after the Supreme Court reinstated 26 lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, who had previously defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Their return to the Assembly significantly shifts the power dynamics, strengthening the APC’s influence over legislative proceedings in Rivers State.

With tensions escalating, Governor Fubara faces mounting pressure as the political crisis in Rivers continues to unfold.
