Prominent Legal, Media Experts To Address Public Confidence In Judiciary At 2024 Gavel International Conference
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), will join key figures from law, media, and academia at the 2024 Gavel International Annual Conference on November 29 to discuss restoring public trust in Nigeria’s judiciary.
Fagbemi is set to deliver the keynote address for the event themed “The Judiciary as the Last Hope of the Common Man: Media and Legal Perspectives.” Esteemed lawyer Mr. Gbenga Oyebode, founder of Aluko & Oyebode Law Firm and board member for major organizations including Nestle Nigeria Plc and Lafarge Africa, will chair the lecture.
Dele Adesina (SAN), former General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and principal partner at Dele Adesina LP, will present the main lecture. Publisher of Gavel International, Mustapha Ogunsakin, emphasized the need for the dialogue, citing a decline in public confidence in the judiciary.
Reflecting on the 2020 #EndSARS protests where Lagos High Court’s Igbosere building was destroyed, Ogunsakin remarked, “We must begin to restore the hope of the common man in the judiciary. The alternative is anarchy.” He highlighted the critical roles of both the legal and media sectors in rebuilding trust.
Prominent speakers include Professor Hope Eghagha of the University of Lagos, who will examine current public perceptions of the judiciary, and Richard Akinnola, an experienced judicial reporter. Joining them are Lagos-based lawyer Mrs. Joke Layi-Babatunde, criminal law expert Mrs. Tomi Ajayi, and prominent human rights advocate Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN).
