President Tinubu Hosts ECOWAS Judicial Council Delegation
President Bola Tinubu welcomed a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Judicial Council to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, February 22.
Led by its Chairman and the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the council delegation met with President Tinubu during their two-day statutory meeting in the nation’s capital, which commenced on Tuesday.
During the opening session of the meeting, CJN Ariwoola emphasized the council’s commitment to promoting justice, peace, and integration across West Africa. He called for the unification of laws within the ECOWAS region to enhance legal cooperation.
In his remarks at the event, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, urged the ECOWAS court to issue judgments and orders that are enforceable across member states. Fagbemi emphasized the importance of considering the unique circumstances of each member state and avoiding judgments that are practically impossible to enforce.
Fagbemi also highlighted the necessity of promoting and strengthening alternative dispute resolution mechanisms within the region to enhance legal efficacy and facilitate conflict resolution.
The meeting between President Tinubu and the ECOWAS Judicial Council delegation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to regional legal cooperation and the pursuit of justice and stability in West Africa.
