Power Crisis: Obi Urges FG To Address National Grid Failures
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Federal Government to tackle Nigeria’s persistent power crisis after another national grid collapse. Since January 2024, the national grid has reportedly failed 10 times, including three outages in October, causing widespread blackouts and public frustration.
In a statement shared on X, Obi compared Nigeria’s power struggles to South Africa’s recent success, noting, “Yesterday, once again, the now regular news of a National Grid collapse broke. Meanwhile, South Africa, previously the second-largest economy in Africa with just a quarter of our population, celebrated seven months of uninterrupted power supply on October 25.”
Obi highlighted that South Africa generates and distributes about 40,000 MW, while Nigeria produces just 10% of that. He emphasized that the issue impacts Nigerians nationwide, cutting across all ethnicities and religions, and rejected any notion that certain groups are less affected.
“Is there any tribe in Nigeria that enjoys uninterrupted power supply like South Africa?” he questioned, dismissing accusations of tribal or religious bias. “The reality is that we all face this failure equally.”
Obi urged Nigerians to look beyond ethnic and religious divides when electing leaders, stressing the need for transformative leadership to address critical challenges in power, health, and education. He called for a shift from a consumer-driven economy to a productive one, urging investments in key sectors to lift people out of poverty and increase electricity production and distribution.
“The solution lies not in tribal or religious affiliations but in visionary leadership and a shared commitment to progress,” he stated.
