Police-NDLEA Clash Sparks Panic In Bayelsa State
A violent clash between officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) caused chaos on Thursday at the Ekeki Police Division in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The altercation reportedly began when NDLEA agents attempted to apprehend a woman suspected of drug trafficking. Before launching their operation, the agents logged their activities in the police records, as standard protocol.
However, as the arrest was underway, officers from the Ekeki Police Division intervened, leading to a heated confrontation. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, which sent panic through the surrounding area.
During the clash, gunfire from the police struck two NDLEA vehicles involved in the operation, seemingly aimed at preventing the agency from taking the suspect into custody.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the police were protecting the drug suspect, accusing them of enabling her drug-related activities within the vicinity of the police division.
NDLEA spokesperson, Mr. Howells Oba, confirmed the incident, stating that the agency is working to resolve the matter and restore order. He added that a formal statement would be issued to provide clarity on the situation.
The incident has raised concerns among residents about potential collaboration between law enforcement and criminal elements, with many calling for an independent investigation into the clash.
