Police Arraign Woman For Alleged Child Theft In Anambra
A 27-year-old unemployed woman, Edna Friday, was arraigned on Wednesday at the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, Anambra State, over allegations of child theft and trafficking.
Ms. Friday, who hails from Urhobo, Delta State, faces a two-count charge of conspiracy and child stealing.
The prosecutor, Corporal Amaechi Augustine, told the court that Ms. Friday and others, currently at large, allegedly committed the offences on January 19 in Awka.
She is accused of stealing a baby girl and participating in the illegal buying and selling of the child.
According to Augustine, the offences violate Section 495(a) of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Vol. II, Revised Laws of Anambra (1991, as amended) and Section 33(4) of the Child Rights Law of Anambra.
Ms. Friday pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate U.E. Onochie granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with one surety in like sum.
The case has been adjourned to March 19 for further mention.
