Governor Fubara Invites Speaker Amaewhule, Lawmakers For Reconciliation Meeting

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has invited Speaker Martin Amaewhule and other lawmakers to a crucial meeting in Port Harcourt. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 11, 2025, and will take place at the Government House.
Tammy Danagogo, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), delivered the invitation through an official letter dated March 7, 2025. In the letter, Governor Fubara acknowledged the recent Supreme Court ruling that reinstated the Amaewhule-led faction of the House of Assembly. This group remains closely aligned with former Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Following the court’s decision, Governor Fubara took steps to open lines of communication. He directed the SSG to invite the lawmakers for discussions aimed at reconciliation. “He has, therefore, directed to invite you and your colleagues, the Honourable members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, to a meeting,” the letter stated.
The meeting seeks to address pressing issues affecting legislative and executive collaboration in the state. First on the agenda is the selection of a suitable venue for Assembly sittings. Since the political crisis began, there has been uncertainty surrounding where the lawmakers should convene.
Secondly, the Governor aims to resolve lingering issues about lawmakers’ remuneration. Many lawmakers have expressed concern over unpaid allowances and salaries, which have added tension to the already strained relationship.
Additionally, the meeting will focus on other critical legislative matters that impact the state’s governance and development.
This meeting could mark a turning point in Rivers State’s ongoing political crisis. By extending this invitation, Governor Fubara is signaling a willingness to engage with opposition lawmakers and restore unity within the government.
Observers believe that successful dialogue could ease tensions and foster cooperation between Governor Fubara and the Amaewhule-led Assembly. All eyes will be on Port Harcourt as the state navigates this delicate political situation.
