PDP Slams Governor Okpebholo For Ignoring Court Orders On Edo LG Chairmen

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Governor Monday Okpebholo of lawlessness over his refusal to obey court judgments reinstating suspended Local Government Chairmen.

At a press briefing in Benin City, PDP described the governor’s actions as a “direct assault on the judiciary” and warned he risks plunging the state into constitutional crisis.

Court Judgments Overturn Suspensions

Two High Court rulings recently ordered the reinstatement of ousted council officials. Justice B.A. Okoh directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure Hon. Tajudeen Alade resumes as Akoko-Edo LGA Chairman.

Likewise, Justice O.M. Obayuwana nullified the impeachment of Hon. Zibiri Marvelous and Hon. Benji Ojietu of Etsako West, calling their removal unconstitutional and politically driven.

The courts also awarded ₦1 million in damages against the councilors involved and issued an injunction restraining further interference.

PDP Demands Compliance with Legal Rulings

PDP Chairman Dr. Tony Aziegbemi slammed the governor’s continued defiance despite clear legal verdicts affirming local government autonomy.

He said, “The courts have spoken. Governor Okpebholo is violating constitutional principles and setting a dangerous precedent of judicial defiance.”

Judicial Disobedience Threatens Governance

Aziegbemi warned that the governor’s stance has already disrupted grassroots governance, fuelling insecurity and poverty in Edo communities.

He insisted the administration must reinstate all affected chairmen or risk deeper administrative chaos and public backlash.

Governor’s Election Under Legal Challenge

Governor Okpebholo’s INEC-declared victory in the September 21 governorship election is being challenged at the Court of Appeal by PDP candidate Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

The PDP urged civil society and constitutional watchdogs to hold the Edo government accountable and defend democratic institutions across Nigeria.
