IGP Suspends Tinted Glass Law Enforcement After Meeting With NBA

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.
The decision followed a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The discussions focused on addressing citizens’ concerns about the enforcement of the tinted glass law and fostering cooperation between the Police and the Bar in protecting human rights.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Thursday, the meeting provided a platform for constructive dialogue on balancing law enforcement duties with respect for due process and civil liberties.
The Police clarified that there is no existing court order restraining enforcement of the tinted glass law. However, in consideration of public interest and the NBA’s intervention, the Inspector-General announced that enforcement has been suspended pending the outcome of a Motion on Notice. The case is scheduled for hearing on October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.
To ensure sustained dialogue, both institutions agreed to establish a Police-NBA Joint Committee. The committee will serve as a platform for resolving legal and enforcement-related issues, enhancing mutual understanding and accountability in law enforcement.
Meanwhile, the Police advised motorists to use the suspension period to update their documents and comply with all regulations on tinted or shaded vehicle glass.
Egbetokun reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to enforce existing laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for citizens’ rights. He emphasized that the Force will continue to collaborate with key stakeholders in the justice sector to strengthen trust and ensure law enforcement operates within the bounds of legality.
The suspension marks a critical step toward improving public confidence in policing while maintaining a balance between enforcement and fundamental freedoms.
