The outgoing Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Oyo State, Barrister Olusola Sulayman, has called on Nigerians to actively combat violence against women and girls. She emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in addressing this pervasive issue.

Barrister Sulayman made the appeal during her end-of-tenure dinner, held at the Afe Babalola Bar Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan. The event coincided with the conclusion of the 2024 Annual Law Week and celebrated her tenure as chairperson from December 2021 to December 2024.

Speaking at the event, she highlighted FIDA’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups. As part of the Law Week activities, the association extended support to orphans at Jesus’ Kids Home in Iwo Road, a facility that provides care for children with Down syndrome. Additionally, FIDA conducted a large-scale sensitization campaign, starting at the palace of the Okere of Saki, Oba Khalid Olabisi, and engaging with communities at Sango Market and Oja Adabo. The campaign focused on encouraging women experiencing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) to speak out and seek help.

Barrister Sulayman underscored the judiciary’s critical role in the fight against SGBV and urged collective responsibility to end such violence.

Reflecting on her tenure, she credited the grace of God for her successful leadership and commended her executive team for their tireless efforts. “It has been a period of immense learning and growth for both me and the association. I am proud of what we have achieved together,” she said.

She also expressed gratitude to the organization’s partners and donors, whose contributions she described as instrumental in realizing FIDA Oyo’s projects and initiatives during her tenure.

Barrister Sulayman encouraged continued support for FIDA’s mission, urging everyone to champion the rights and welfare of women and children wherever possible.
