Otu Oka-Iwu Abuja Condemns Calls For “Ndi-Igbo” To Leave Lagos, Labels It A Treasonable Offence
Otu Oka-Iwu Abuja has strongly condemned the recent calls for the Igbo community to leave Lagos, describing such rhetoric as treasonable and a grave threat to the unity of Nigeria. The association, led by its President, Chidi Udekwe, Esq., expressed deep concern over the ongoing threats that endanger the lives and security of Ndi Igbo across the country.
In a statement released to The Metro Lawyer (TML) news desk, and signed by its President, Otu Oka-Iwu Abuja emphasized that this is not the first time such dangerous sentiments have surfaced, noting that similar calls were made during the 2023 elections with little to no response from the authorities. The group warned that these recurring threats could lead to serious consequences if not addressed promptly, drawing parallels to the events that led to the Nigerian civil war.
Otu Oka-Iwu also reminded those responsible for the threats of the constitutional rights guaranteed to every Nigerian citizen. The group highlighted Section 41 and Section 43 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which entitles every citizen to move freely and reside anywhere within Nigeria, as well as the right to own property in any part of the country.
The association further criticized the negative stereotyping of the Igbo community, often portrayed as secessionists or criminals in both government-controlled and independent media. This, they argue, has fueled resentment and contributed to the marginalization of the Igbo people. They also pointed out the recent insinuations that the Igbo masterminded the #Endbadgovernance protests, calling it a scapegoating tactic to malign the community.
Otu Oka-Iwu called on the Inspector General of Police to take swift action before the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued by Dr. Sam Amadi, urging all well-meaning Igbo associations to rise in defense of the unity of Nigeria. The group also acknowledged the positive contributions of the Igbo community to Nigeria’s progress, citing historical figures like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu.
In conclusion, Otu Oka-Iwu expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for condemning such divisive statements in his #EndBadGovernance speech and commended all individuals and organizations that have stood in solidarity with the Igbo community during this challenging time.
