Anambra State Initiates Legal Proceedings Against Lawyer For Alleged Abuse Of Minor House Help

Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has announced that legal action has been initiated against a female lawyer, Adachukwu Cukelu-Okafor, for the alleged abuse of an 11-year-old house girl under her care. The incident occurred in Akpaka, Onitsha, within the Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Governor Soludo revealed through a Facebook post that his administration has commenced the prosecution of Mrs. Adachukwu Cukelu-Okafor, who is accused of brutally mistreating the minor using a broken bottle, knife, and electric iron. The child had reportedly been staying with the lawyer since January 5.

The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare in Anambra, Ify Obinabo, intervened in the matter after being notified by the human rights group, Defend Your Rights Foundation. According to a statement from the commissioner’s media aide, Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the survivor has been rescued from the suspect and taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

The alleged abuse stemmed from accusations made by Mrs. Cukelu-Okafor against the young girl, accusing her of touching the lawyer’s daughter. The commissioner’s prompt intervention underscores the commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and minors in the state.

Governor Soludo emphasized on his Facebook page that his administration will not tolerate the abuse or violation of vulnerable individuals, especially minors. He condemned the actions of Mrs. Cukelu-Okafor, stating that she, along with others who engage in such misconduct, do not deserve a place in decent society.

The governor affirmed the commencement of legal actions against the lawyer, emphasizing that her prosecution serves as a firm warning to all abusers within the state. He highlighted that Anambra State has long domesticated laws such as the Child’s Right Act (2003) and Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (2017) to address and prevent abuse and violence.

Governor Soludo concluded by reiterating his administration’s commitment to establishing law and order as the foundation for building a liveable and prosperous homeland for the residents of Anambra State.
