Ondo Governor Grants Clemency To 117 Convicts In Display Of Compassion And Justice

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has shown a commitment to justice and rehabilitation by granting clemency to 117 convicts in the state. This move follows recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, emphasizing a focus on second chances and reform within the justice system.

Of the beneficiaries, 19 convicts will be released outright, while others will have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Additionally, several inmates will see reductions in their sentences, offering them renewed hope and opportunities for reintegration into society.

The clemency was announced in a statement signed by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council. The release orders were signed by Governor Aiyedatiwa on September 27, 2024, with the changes to take effect on October 1, 2024, aligning with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions are in accordance with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” stated Dr. Ajulo. He added that the Advisory Council carefully reviewed each application, considering input from correctional authorities, legal experts, and community members, while evaluating factors such as the nature of the crimes, length of incarceration, and the inmates’ behaviour.

This compassionate gesture reflects the governor’s commitment to decongesting correctional facilities in Ondo State and is a key aspect of ongoing justice sector reforms. Dr. Ajulo concluded, “The approval for these releases not only represents a step towards mercy but also reaffirms the belief in the potential for change and redemption within every individual.”
