Okpebholo Sworn In As Edo State Governor, Appoints Oshiomhole’s Son To Cabinet

Senator Monday Okpebholo was inaugurated as the Governor of Edo State on Tuesday, taking over from Godwin Obaseki after winning the September 21, 2024, governorship election. The swearing-in ceremony, held in Benin City, saw Okpebholo and Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa take their oaths of office, administered by Justice Daniel Okungbowa, amid a large crowd and tight security.

In his inaugural address, Governor Okpebholo unveiled a five-point agenda focusing on security, infrastructure, healthcare, food security, and education. He pledged to tackle crime and improve road conditions, assuring Edo residents of his commitment to economic growth and better living standards.

Highlighting immediate priorities, Okpebholo promised to support small businesses, recruit teachers, and improve educational facilities. He also committed to connecting rural communities to electricity and supporting the state’s traditional institutions.

Notably, Governor Okpebholo appointed Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, son of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, as Commissioner for Health-designate. Other key appointees include Musa Ikhilor as Secretary to the State Government and Samson Osagie as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice-designate.

President Bola Tinubu extended congratulations to Okpebholo, urging him to prioritize the well-being of Edo citizens and strengthen the state’s democracy. Vice President Kashim Shettima led a federal delegation to the event, joined by top political figures including APC governors and party leaders.

The Edo State Youth Parliament called for youth inclusion in Okpebholo’s government, voicing confidence in the new administration’s potential to advance youth development and economic empowerment.

Meanwhile, an aide to former Governor Obaseki dismissed rumors that he had fled the country, confirming he was in Lagos with friends and business associates and had expressed gratitude to Edo residents in a broadcast.
