“Oba’s Word Is A Command”: Afe Babalola Drops Charges Against Dele Farotimi After Ooni’s Intervention
The founder and chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, has withdrawn all criminal charges against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other prominent traditional rulers.
Addressing journalists on Sunday, Babalola stated that he could not disregard the commands of the traditional institutions. “The statement of an Oba in Yoruba tradition from time immemorial is a command,” he said.
Farotimi had been accused of defamation after publishing a book titled *Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System*, in which he alleged that the renowned lawyer and university founder had corrupted the judiciary.
Explaining his decision to drop the charges, Babalola said: “I rejected an oil block, defended the EFCC law, and declined ministerial appointments twice. I wonder why anyone would wake up and try to rubbish all I have laboured for. But I have nothing to gain from his imprisonment. I am happy each time I give.”
The Ooni of Ife, who played a significant role in mediating the matter, commended Aare Babalola for his magnanimity. “We all came together to discuss the matter with him, and he gave full respect to the Obas and agreed,” the monarch said.
The Ooni further lauded Babalola’s contributions to the Yoruba race, Nigeria, and the global community. “Aare Afe Babalola has proven to the world that he cherishes his name, and the world has heard him loud and clear. Dele Farotimi is your son. As elders, when our children offend us, after a little spank, we pardon them,” he added.
While Babalola has withdrawn his charges, some lawyers implicated in Farotimi’s book have indicated they may continue their cases in court. Speaking off the record, some of the lawyers told journalists that they felt defamed by allegations in the book and are set to deliberate on the way forward.
A joint statement from the affected lawyers is expected following their meeting later today.
The development underscores the influence of traditional rulers in conflict resolution within Nigeria and highlights Aare Babalola’s stature as a statesman willing to put reconciliation above personal grievances.
