NSCDC Arrests Fake Naval Rating In Anambra State
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State has arrested a man impersonating a Nigerian Navy officer and engaging in fraudulent activities. The suspect, Chukwugozirim Christian, a 39-year-old from Nnobi in Idemili North Local Government Area, was apprehended by NSCDC operatives on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, during a routine patrol at Kwata Junction in Awka.
Anambra State NSCDC Commandant, Maku Olatunde, presented the suspect at the command headquarters in Awka on Thursday. Olatunde revealed that preliminary investigations showed the suspect had been posing as a naval officer, deceiving civilians, and committing various criminal acts.
“On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, our personnel were on patrol to enforce the directive from Commandant General Ahmed Audi, aimed at preventing disruptions during the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest,” Olatunde stated. “The suspect’s unusual appearance and behaviour raised suspicions, leading our operatives to pursue and apprehend him.”
Upon questioning, the suspect claimed to be a naval rating, but verification from the Naval Base in Onitsha confirmed he was an impostor with no ties to the Nigerian Navy. A search of his residence uncovered military gear, including a walkie-talkie, beret, blue combat uniform, camouflage top, machete, and other naval paraphernalia.
Olatunde commended the NSCDC operatives for their vigilance and reiterated the corps’ commitment to protecting Anambra State residents from impostors and criminals. He directed the Intelligence and Investigation Department to identify and apprehend the suspect’s accomplices, promising that the suspect would be prosecuted upon the investigation’s conclusion.
“The corps remains committed to safeguarding the citizens of Anambra State, and we will continue to take decisive action against those who threaten their security and well-being,” Olatunde added, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
