Nnamdi Kanu Apologizes In Court As New Legal Team Led by Kanu Agabi (SAN) Takes Over Defence

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), returned to the Federal High Court in Abuja today.

Justice James Omotosho now presides over his case, replacing Justice Binta Nyako, who previously handled the matter.

Kanu also changed his legal team for the treason trial. Kanu Agabi (SAN) now leads his defense in court proceedings.

The prosecution retained Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), who has been handling the case since the matter began.

Shortly after appearances, Chief Agabi addressed the court and apologized on behalf of Nnamdi Kanu for previous misconduct.

He specifically apologized to Justice Nyako, the prosecution team, and Kanu’s legal team, who faced verbal attacks.

Chief Agabi stated the defendant had harbored anger for a long time and admitted his behavior was unjustified.

He explained that the attack on Justice Nyako lacked justification and deeply regretted the actions of his client.

Agabi extended apologies to the prosecution team, led by Awomolo, and to the chairman of the Body of Benchers.

He emphasized that Kanu respects the chairman highly and regrets any disrespect shown during past proceedings.

Agabi described Nnamdi Kanu as a good man and urged the court to allow room for human mistakes.

He pleaded with all parties to focus on resolution and avoid further destruction in the ongoing trial.

Awomolo accepted the apology, promising to support a speedy hearing and understanding the defendant’s emotional frustrations.

Justice Omotosho noted the long trial had affected Nnamdi Kanu, who was 47 at arraignment and is now 57.

He said the stress may have led to his inappropriate remarks, which the court acknowledged with understanding.

Justice Omotosho also apologized to the prosecution on behalf of Nnamdi Kanu to foster harmony in court.
