NILA Conference Concludes On A High Note: Experts Weigh In On Border Management And Migrants’ Rights
The final day of the NILA Conference was a resounding success, featuring insightful presentations and discussions from renowned experts in the field.
The highlight of the day was the presentation on “The Future of Border Management in Nigeria: Technology, Infrastructure, and Cooperation” by Dr. Aminu Idris and Dr. Nsemba Lenshie. These two experts in border security governance and migration shed light on the importance of leveraging technology and infrastructure to enhance border management in Nigeria.
This was followed by a thought-provoking discussion on “Strengthening Policy and Legislative Frameworks for Migrants’ Rights” led by Professor Cheluchi Onyemelukwe. The distinguished scholar addressed the critical intersection of migration, health, gender, and human rights, highlighting the misaligned provisions and implementation gaps in the current policy and legislative framework. She also offered valuable recommendations for improvements.
The day culminated with the unveiling of the maiden edition of the NILA Law Journal by Dr. Roland Otaru, SAN, a Trustee of the Association.
According to Prince Ebere Nwokoro, the 1st Vice President of NILA, the journal aims to provide a platform for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to share their research and insights on immigration law and policy issues.
In his closing remarks, Prince Nwokoro expressed optimism that the discussions, insights, and recommendations from the conference will significantly contribute to improving immigration law and policy in Nigeria. He emphasised the Association’s confidence in achieving a more effective and efficient migration management system that balances national security concerns with human rights and economic necessities.
