Nigerian Police Ban Use Of Dark Glasses With Uniforms, Non-Compliance To Attract Sanctions

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting police personnel from wearing dark glasses while in uniform, effective immediately.

The announcement, detailed in a wireless message dated January 21, 2025, was addressed to all zonal and state police commands. The memo emphasises that non-compliance with the directive will attract strict disciplinary actions.

The message, titled CB:4001/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.121/104, reads:
“The Inspector General of Police has observed with concern the prevalent practice of personnel wearing dark glasses while in uniform. This attitude reflects poorly on the Force and is deemed unacceptable. Consequently, the IGP directs that, henceforth, all police personnel should refrain from wearing dark glasses while in uniform. Violation of this directive will attract severe disciplinary action. This directive should be the subject of lectures, and strict compliance is expected. Treat as very important.”

The decision, as noted by the police authorities, aims to uphold professionalism and ensure proper public perception of officers while on duty.

All zonal and state commands have been instructed to enforce the directive rigorously and ensure that personnel are informed of the new rule through educational sessions.
