Nigerian Maritime Law Association Reaffirms Commitment To Advancing Maritime Laws

The Nigerian Maritime Law Association (NMLA) has reiterated its dedication to enhancing maritime laws and practices in Nigeria, aiming to strengthen the nation’s position in the international shipping community.

Speaking at the association’s 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos, NMLA President Mrs. Funke Agbor, SAN, emphasized the importance of reflecting on achievements, addressing challenges, and reinforcing the legal framework in the maritime sector. The AGM, themed “Navigating Policy and Innovation: Practical Pathways to a Green Future for Nigeria’s Maritime Sector,” served as a platform to discuss pivotal reforms and strategies for sustainable growth.

“Today, we gather with a shared purpose: to reflect on our achievements, address the challenges ahead, and reinforce our commitment to enhancing maritime law and practice in Nigeria,” Agbor stated.

She highlighted the association’s role in driving legal reforms, fostering best practices, and aligning with international conventions to support Nigeria’s aspirations of becoming a regional leader in maritime operations and governance.

This year’s AGM featured panel discussions on key topics, including the judicial sale of ships, sustainable ship recycling, and cybersecurity in the maritime industry. According to Agbor, these discussions will help ensure Nigeria remains competitive and compliant with global maritime standards.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Mr. Pius Akutah, represented by Bala Saleh, Director of Legal Services, commended the NMLA for its efforts in shaping maritime law and policy. He noted that the AGM’s theme aligns with the NSC’s mission to build a resilient and sustainable maritime sector.

Akutah also highlighted the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to revolutionise Nigeria’s maritime industry by unlocking new opportunities through enhanced intra-African trade. “AfCFTA provides a platform to tap into larger markets, positioning Nigeria as a vital hub for regional trade,” he remarked.

The event brought together stakeholders from across the sector to discuss policy advancements, innovation, and actionable outcomes to advance Nigeria’s maritime industry.
