Nigerian Man Extradited From UK To US Over Global Fraud Scheme

A 41-year-old Nigerian man, Ehis Akhimie, has been extradited from the United Kingdom (UK) to the United States(US) to face charges related to organized crime, including a global fraud scheme that targeted older consumers in the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed his extradition in a statement released on Friday, March 28, attributing the move to extensive international cooperation between law enforcement agencies across multiple countries.

According to the DOJ, the extradition resulted from coordinated efforts involving agencies from Colombia, the Dominican Republic, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Spain, and the UK.

“The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs provided significant assistance in securing the defendants’ arrests and extraditions along with the U.S. Marshals Service,” the report stated.

Matthew R. Galeotti, head of the DOJ’s Criminal Division, highlighted that law enforcement authorities extradited Akhimie along with several other suspects, including individuals charged with murder, child rape, leading the MS-13 gang, alien smuggling, Colombian drug trafficking, Russian cybercrime, and immigration fraud.

“The dedicated, persistent work of the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs with foreign partners resulted in the extradition of fugitives wanted in the United States for violent crimes,” Galeotti noted.

He reiterated the U.S. government’s commitment to holding transnational criminals accountable, adding, “The Justice Department will aggressively pursue and bring to justice those responsible for death and violence, both in the United States and abroad.”
