Nigerian Lawyer Praises Anukam’s Re-election To African Court

Abuja-based lawyer Emmanuel Umahi Ekwe has lauded the re-election of Justice Stella Anukam to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for another six-year term, calling it a significant achievement for Nigeria and the legal profession.

Ekwe stated that Justice Anukam’s re-election was both expected and highly anticipated due to her substantial contributions to human rights jurisprudence in Africa. He stated, “Justice Anukam’s re-election to the African Court on human rights was expected and was anticipated.”

Justice Anukam was re-elected during the African Union (AU) mid-year coordination meeting’s executive council session in Accra, Ghana, held on Friday. Her continued presence on the court is seen as a testament to her legal expertise and dedication to human rights issues on the continent.

President Bola Tinubu also commended Anukam for her role in advancing human rights laws across Africa. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu praised her contributions and urged her to continue providing her invaluable knowledge and insights to the African Court. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to supporting qualified Nigerians for international positions, highlighting the country’s strategic importance in the global community.

Justice Anukam, who was first elected to the African Court in 2018, earned her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, in 1984 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985. She is also a chartered secretary, chartered arbitrator, and experienced administrator.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights was established by African states to ensure the protection of human and peoples’ rights across the continent. Justice Anukam’s re-election is expected to further strengthen the court’s mission and impact.

Ekwe urged Justice Anukam to continue showcasing her legal expertise at the continental level, reinforcing her vital role in the development of human rights jurisprudence in Africa.
