Nigerian Lawyer Highlights Causes Of Depression Among Nigerians In The UK

UK-based Nigerian lawyer, Efuru Nwapa, has attributed the high rate of depression among Nigerians in the United Kingdom to their failure to take advantage of available opportunities.

In an interview with PUNCH Diaspora Tales, Nwapa noted that while many Nigerians struggle with regrets and depression abroad, thousands of others are excelling by acquiring new skills and leveraging opportunities in various fields.

“I’ve had the opportunity to speak to a few people whom I met in different circumstances of depression. You just need to develop yourself,” she said. “If you need to get new skills, go back to school, and take advantage of the opportunities available.”

She emphasized that numerous Nigerians in the UK are thriving in sectors such as education, IT, engineering, and medicine, stating, “Nigerians are the best when it comes to that.”

Speaking on the legal profession in Nigeria, Nwapa, who is also an energy sector analyst, called for reforms to address impunity among lawyers and judges.

“There’s impunity everywhere in Nigeria, and it’s even worse in the legal profession because people do what they like and get away with it since there are no consequences,” she said.
