Nigerian Lawyer Exits WhatsApp Group Over Wedding Contribution Demand
A Nigerian lawyer has made headlines after exiting a WhatsApp group created by a friend who requested a hefty contribution towards his upcoming wedding.
The lawyer, who was not particularly close to the groom-to-be, expressed disbelief at the demand for ₦200,000 (approximately $500) from each member of the group. Additionally, the groom requested contributions for family fabric, known as asoebi, adding to the financial burden.
In a social media post, the lawyer recounted his shock at the groom’s request, stating, “A not so close friend created a WhatsApp group last week for his wedding. I was even happy that at least I would attend a wedding to gbe body after a long time.”
The lawyer further explained that after discussions about asoebi, the groom announced that members of the group would also serve as groomsmen and were expected to contribute at least ₦200,000 each towards the wedding expenses. The lawyer expressed astonishment at the payment deadline, set for the end of May, just a month before the June wedding.
Unable to comprehend the demand, the lawyer quietly exited the group and proceeded to block the groom on all social media platforms, including WhatsApp.
The incident has sparked discussions on social media about the appropriateness of wedding contribution requests and the strain it can place on friendships. Many users expressed sympathy for the lawyer’s decision, highlighting the importance of setting reasonable expectations when planning weddings.
