Nigerian Journalist Adejuwon Soyinka Released By DSS
Nigerian journalist Adejuwon Soyinka has been released from the Department of State Security (DSS) custody, according to a close associate.
Soyinka, who serves as the Regional Editor for The Conversation Africa, was reportedly detained by the DSS early Sunday morning at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, shortly after arriving from the United Kingdom.
DSS spokesman Dr. Peter Afunanya confirmed the arrest, stating that it was carried out at the request of another law enforcement agency. However, he did not specify which agency was involved.
The arrest sparked widespread condemnation from civil society organizations, including the Socio-Economic Rights and Advocacy Project (SERAP), which called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to “end the persecution of journalists simply for doing their job.”
Soyinka’s release was confirmed hours later by a friend, although his travel passport remains in the possession of the DSS.
