Nigeria Judges Association Joins Global Judicial Network Of International Association Of Judges Admits New Members

The National Association of Judges in Nigeria has achieved a historic milestone by gaining admission into the prestigious International Association of Judges (IAJ). The official announcement came during the 67th Annual Meeting of the global body, currently taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.
With this admission, Nigeria becomes the 93rd member of the international association, marking a significant moment of recognition and confidence in the Nigerian judiciary. The decision follows a detailed evaluation of Nigeria’s judicial system, including its ongoing reforms under the leadership of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
Before confirming Nigeria’s membership, the International Association of Judges considered the various challenges confronting the country’s judiciary. However, it acknowledged the visible progress and institutional reforms being undertaken to enhance transparency, efficiency, and judicial independence.
Reacting to the development, Justice Kekere-Ekun described the admission as a proud and humbling achievement for Nigeria. She emphasized the country’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to the goals of the Association.
She said: “Nigeria embraces this membership with humility, commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility. We recognize the values that this Association upholds, and we are determined to contribute actively to its mission. We are committed to further strengthening the independence of our judiciary, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring the continued protection and promotion of human rights in our country.”
Founded in 1953 in Salzburg, Austria, the International Association of Judges serves as a professional, non-political organization that unites national associations of judges from across the world. Its primary objective is to safeguard judicial independence and promote human rights and freedom globally.
The Association currently comprises 93 national associations spanning five continents, with Nigeria as its newest member. The Central Council, its executive body, includes representatives from each member association and meets annually to advance the IAJ’s mission.
This admission firmly places the National Association of Judges in Nigeria within an influential global judicial network, strengthening its voice in promoting justice, accountability, and the rule of law worldwide.
