NIALS 46th Founders’ Day Lecture 2025 Explores Tax Reform Bills and Legal Implications

The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) held its 46th Founders’ Day Lecture on Thursday, the 20th March 2025. The focus of the lecture was on the ongoing tax reform bills and their legal implications in Nigeria. The annual lecture provided a platform for experts, policymakers, and scholars to engage in critical discussions on pressing national issues.
Amidst mixed reactions to the tax reform bills, the guest lecturer, Prof. Abiola Sanni, SAN, and Dean of Law at the University of Lagos, delivered a keynote address on the theme “Dynamics of Poverty, Tax Reform Bills, and National Development in Nigeria.” He highlighted the numerous positive aspects of the proposed tax reforms and their potential to enhance economic development.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, acknowledged the timeliness of the discussion. She emphasised the need for an efficient tax system to drive economic growth. To this end, she pointed out that governments around the world leverage taxation as a critical tool for economic management, infrastructural development, and reducing social inequalities.
Among the notable attendees were Prof. Abdulqadir Abikan, the Director General of NIALS, Victor Muruako, Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Committee. Also, another prominent legal luminary among the attendees was former Chairman of NBA Abuja Branch (Unity Bar) Afam Okeke, Esq.
