The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has praised Nigerian journalists for their unwavering commitment to advancing human rights and giving voice to victims of abuse.

Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, Executive Secretary of the Commission, extended this commendation during a media parley held on Monday at the NHRC headquarters in Abuja.

Represented by Hajia Rabi Anwar, Director of Legal Services and Enforcement, Ojukwu acknowledged the critical role of the media in promoting the Commission’s work and raising awareness of human rights issues both nationally and globally.

“This year, we have witnessed extensive and impactful publicity around human rights issues, thanks to your unwavering commitment and professionalism,” Ojukwu stated. “Your work has not only raised awareness but also fostered security and accountability for victims of abuse.”

Ojukwu highlighted how journalists have empowered victims of abuse by increasing awareness of their rights and providing a platform to seek redress. This advocacy, he noted, has improved Nigeria’s human rights standing within the global community.

“The storytelling techniques and ability of journalists to narrate human rights issues in a relatable and impactful manner have been invaluable in shaping public opinion and advancing the Commission’s mandate,” he added.

The NHRC reiterated its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the media, pledging continued capacity-building initiatives to enhance reporting on complex human rights concerns, including migration, business ethics, and emerging global challenges.

“The Commission values your dedication and remains committed to supporting your efforts in covering human rights issues effectively,” Ojukwu said.

The NHRC reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and collaboration with journalists, describing them as indispensable allies in the fight for justice, equity, and the promotion of human dignity.
