Newgate University Minna (NUM) Niger State, has named its newly established Faculty of Law complex after former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), the late Justice Idris Kutigi; and Legacy Library after first Chief Judge (CJ) of Niger State, the late Justice Mu’azu Mohammed.

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger said “the law faculty is not just an ordinary department of the institution, but a centre of learning where minds will be shaped, ideas will be complemented and courses of justice passed from one generation to another.”

The governor stated this, at the weekend, in his keynote during the commissioning of the faculty of law complex at the university premises in Minna.

Bago, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Abdullahi Mammagi, noted that the two former legal icons left indelible marks in the country’s legal landscape, having paved the way for future generations of legal minds.

According to him, Newgate University has continued to stand as a beacon of education, fostering knowledge, critical thinking as well as observing ethical values.

He said: “As we commission this complex, let us remember that education empowers individuals and communities leading to a brighter future.”
Bago congratulated the university, the faculty and staff for their dedication and commitment to the educational advancement of the state.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of NUM, Prof Sadiq Yusuf, had explained that the university named the Faculty of Law complex after Kutigi, the 11th CJN, who exemplified the highest standards of integrity, wisdom and commitment to justice.

He pointed out that the legacies of Kutigi not only permeated the legal fraternity of Niger, but resonated throughout the country.

“The Law library is dedicated to Mohammad for his pioneering efforts and unwavering dedication to the cause of justice, which laid the foundation for the legal system in Niger,” the VC said.

Founder and Pro-Chancellor of NUM, Hassan Nuhu, disclosed that the contributions of the Kutigi family were not only a proof of their commitment to education and a gesture of love to humanity, but also a contribution to the institution’s dream.

“The library, now boasting some of the finest collections in the field of Law, serves as a beacon of education, offering our students and researchers a reservoir of information that will undoubtedly shape their legal acumen and contribute to the advancement of legal scholarship within our nation,” Nuhu said.

Families of the two late judges lauded the university management for the honour done to them.
