New Orleans Attack Linked To Islamic State Inspiration, Says Biden
U.S. President Joe Biden revealed that the New Orleans New Year’s Day car-ramming attack, which left at least 15 dead and dozens injured, was inspired by the terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS).
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Biden cited FBI findings, stating that the perpetrator, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din J, posted videos online expressing admiration for ISIS and his intent to cause mass casualties. The attack occurred in a crowded area of New Orleans known for drawing large numbers of visitors during major events.
New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the attacker’s actions as deliberate, saying, “He was hellbent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.” The suspect engaged in a gunfight with officers, injuring two, before being killed.
The FBI identified the attacker as a U.S. citizen from Texas, with a history of military service in the U.S. Army and the Army Reserve. Investigators also discovered potential explosive devices inside and outside the pickup truck used in the attack, along with an ISIS flag.
Biden emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing but confirmed the incident is being treated as an act of terrorism.
Authorities are also reviewing surveillance footage, which initially raised suspicions about a group of four individuals potentially linked to the attack. However, they were later ruled out as suspects. FBI investigator Alethea Duncan noted that they are still investigating whether the driver acted alone.
The attack marks a grim start to the year, with security agencies nationwide on high alert to prevent similar incidents.
